
Flint was also the home of a sit-down strike in 1936–37 that played a vital role in the formation of the United Auto Workers. General Motors (GM) was founded in Flint in 1908, and the city grew into an automobile manufacturing powerhouse for GM's Buick and Chevrolet divisions, especially after World War II up until the early 1980s recession. From the late 19th century to the mid 20th century, the city was a leading manufacturer of carriages and later automobiles, earning it the nickname "Vehicle City". Herb was a 50-year member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Columbus and had memberships in the OSU Golf Club, the Worthington Hills Country Club, OSU Alumni Association, American Legion and life member Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was honored with a Citizen of the Year Award by the downtown Kiwanis Club, Columbus Area Council of Churches, Public Relations Society of Central Ohio and Lane Avenue Baptist Church. For more than 54 years, he taught Bible study classes and held many administrative positions at the Lane Avenue Baptist Church and Dublin Baptist Church. He served as Advisory Board Chairman of the Salvation Army of Central Ohio and was named Lifetime Member, Chairman of the Central Ohio Better Business Bureau, President of the Central Ohio Public Relations Society and President of The Ohio State University's Franklin County Alumni Club. Subsequently joined his good friend Richard Burkholder for more than 30 years in the advertising and public relations firm Burkholder Flint & Associates where he was chairman at his retirement.

Army during the World War II era and following college, he was employed by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, where he held several management positions including Mid-Western Regional Public Relations Manager in Chicago. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and Bucket and Dipper Junior Men's Honorary.

Herb graduated from Orrville Ohio High School and The Ohio State University School of Journalism and served as Business Manager of the OSU student newspaper, The Lantern. He is also survived by Donna's daughter, Kelly (Mike) Bull son, Chuck (Kathy) Greene and grandchildren, Michael (Meghan) and Daniel Bull and Chase, Tyler, Tanner Greene and Karlee (Derek) Cooks. (Vance/Greene) daughters, Bonnie (David) Lucas and Molly Sue (Craig) Drozda and son, Brian (Donna) Flint grandchildren, Adam (Lauren) Dyas, Brant (Betsy) Lucas, Sean Flint, Shannon Flint, Terie Flint, Jennifer Jones, Kara Flint, Eric Nicodemus five greatgrandchildren, and many nephews and nieces.

Preceded in death by his parents, first wife Margaret "Peg", the mother of his children, brother John (Margaret), sisters Elizabeth (Harry) Pollak, Ruth (Walter) Handwerk, Florence (Willard) Fritz and Marion (Warren) Steiner. Born in Orrville, Ohio on August 4, 1928, to Herbert, Sr. Herbert "Herb" Flint reached his goal of presence with his Lord on September 30, 2021.
